  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cubed*
  • 1/4 cup ice-cold water plus more as needed
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • egg wash: 1 large egg beaten with 1 Tablespoon milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • optional: coarse sugar

Filling

  • 3 apples peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch slices
  • 1/4 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • optional: salted caramel sauce

Instructions

  • Whisk flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl.

  • Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Add water, stirring until dough is moistened. Add more water if needed.
