Equipment

  • Whisk or Electric Hand Mixer
  • Measuring Spoons and Cups
  • Baking Sheet and Tray
  • Rolling Pin if using homemade dough
  • Sharp Knife or Pizza Cutter
  • Pastry Brush optional
  • Cooling Rack optional

Ingredients

For the Danish:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed according to package instructions
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup cherry pie filling
  • ¼ cup sliced almonds optional

For the Danish Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to create a larger square or rectangle (if needed).
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  • Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
  • Spoon the cherry pie filling over the cream cheese layer.
  • If desired, sprinkle sliced almonds on top of the cherry filling.
  • Gently fold the edges of the puff pastry inward to create a border, pressing lightly to secure the folds.
  • Transfer the assembled pastry onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until the pastry turns golden brown and puffs up.

For the Danish Glaze:

  • While the Danish is baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Once the Danish is baked and has cooled for a few minutes, drizzle the glaze over the top.
  • Allow the glaze to set for a couple of minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  1. I used a can of cherries for convenience, but fresh cherries work just as well, especially in the cherry season.
  2. Almond extract is an additional substitute for vanilla extract.
Use real, fresh lemon juice whenever feasible, as packaged lemon juice frequently contains preservatives and additives.
  3. Allow the pastry to cool before applying the glaze to avoid melting it.
