Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats preferably quick-cooking or old-fashioned
  • 2 cups water or milk for cooking the oats
  • 1 large apple peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon for warmth and sweetness
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom adds floral aroma
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup for sweetness
  • pinch salt to enhance flavor

Instructions

  • Bring water or milk to a gentle simmer in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the rolled oats to the simmering liquid, stirring with a wooden spoon to prevent sticking and clumping.
  • Chop the apple into small, even pieces and add them to the oats, stirring to distribute evenly.
  • Sprinkle in the ground cinnamon, ground cardamom, and a pinch of salt, stirring well to combine and release aromatic smells.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the oats have absorbed the liquid and the apples are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Once the mixture thickens and the apples soften, stir in honey or maple syrup for added sweetness.
  • Remove from heat and let sit for a minute to thicken further and let flavors meld.
  • Scoop the warm oatmeal into bowls, garnished optionally with extra cinnamon or fresh fruit for presentation.
