Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 peeled and thinly sliced large yellow onions
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 3 teaspoons avoado oil
  • 1 pound 80/20 ground chuck
  • 6 ounces shredded swiss cheese
  • 6 thick slices of rye bread
  • coarse salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, season with salt, and cook covered for 5-6 minutes. Stir occasionally and cook on low for 30-35 minutes until dark brown. Deglaze with vinegar and set aside.
  • Form the ground beef into 3 patties and place them on a parchment-lined sheet tray.
  • Slice the rye bread and shred the Swiss cheese.
  • Heat a griddle or skillet to medium-high. Season the burger patties with salt and pepper, then cook for 3 minutes per side.
  • Butter each side of the rye bread and toast until golden brown.
  • Top each slice of toasted bread with Swiss cheese and caramelized onions. Add a cooked burger patty, then top with another slice of bread. Slice and serve.
