Oreo Dirt Cake Recipe
Hey folks! Anne Carter here from Beyond The Bayou Blog. Today, I’ve got a tasty treat to share with you all – an Oreo Dirt Cake!
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, I decided to surprise my partner with a homemade Oreo Dirt Cake. I wanted to capture the sweetness of our journey together, so I carefully prepared the dessert a couple of days in advance, infusing each step with love and nostalgia.
On our anniversary day, I presented the Oreo Dirt Cake, complete with a candle. Their smile said it all as we enjoyed slices of the creamy dessert together, accompanied by glasses of Caramel Iced Coffee. It was a simple yet unforgettable way to celebrate a decade of love and laughter.

Oreo Dirt Cake
This Oreo Dirt Cake is a creamy, no-bake dessert made with layers of crushed Oreo cookies and a rich vanilla pudding cheesecake filling. The crushed cookies look just like soil, while gummy worms add the classic playful finish. It’s an easy make-ahead dessert that’s perfect for Halloween parties, potlucks, birthdays, and family gatherings.

Equipment
- 9×13-inch baking dish
- Large mixing bowls
- Electric hand mixer or stand mixer
- Food processor or rolling pin
- Rubber spatula
Ingredients
For the Oreo Layers
- 1 package 14–15 oz Oreo cookies
- 8 –10 gummy worms plus more for decorating
For the Creamy Filling
- 2 packages 3.4 oz each instant vanilla pudding mix
- 3 cups cold whole milk
- 8 oz cream cheese softened
- ½ cup unsalted butter softened
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 16 oz whipped topping thawed
Instructions
- Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor and pulse until finely crushed, resembling dark soil. If you don’t have a food processor, place the cookies in a sealed bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
- Whisk the instant pudding mixes with the cold milk for about 2 minutes, until thickened. Refrigerate for 5 minutes while preparing the cream cheese mixture.
- Beat the softened cream cheese and butter together with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
- Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and beat until completely smooth.
- Gradually add the chilled pudding mixture and beat on low speed until fully combined and creamy.
- Fold in the whipped topping with a spatula until no white streaks remain.
- Spread about half of the crushed Oreos evenly across the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread the pudding mixture evenly over the Oreo layer, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Cover the filling with the remaining crushed Oreos, creating a thick “dirt” layer across the entire surface.
- Tuck gummy worms into the Oreo crumbs, leaving some visible on top to create the classic dirt-and-worms appearance.
- Cover the dish tightly and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, so the cookies soften and the filling sets properly.
- Serve chilled, scooping through the Oreo “dirt” and creamy pudding layers.
Notes
- Use instant pudding: Do not substitute cook-and-serve pudding because it will not set properly without being cooked.
- Crush the Oreos finely: The fine crumbs create the realistic “dirt” appearance, while a few slightly larger pieces add texture.
- Use room-temperature cream cheese: Softened cream cheese blends much more smoothly and helps prevent lumps.
- For Halloween: Add extra gummy worms, candy pumpkins, candy eyeballs, or edible tombstone decorations to turn the classic dirt cake into a spooky Halloween dessert.
- Chill overnight: The Oreo crumbs soften as they sit with the creamy filling, giving the dessert its classic dirt-cake texture.

Some Things to Keep in Mind!
- Crushing Oreos: For the perfect consistency in your dirt cake, opt for using a food processor to crush the Oreo cookies. It ensures a consistently crushed product, giving your dessert that ideal texture.
- Softened Cream Cheese and Butter: Make sure your cream cheese and butter are softened before mixing them into the pudding mixture. This helps avoid lumps and ensures a smooth, creamy texture throughout.
- Chilling Time: While an hour in the refrigerator will cool the mixture, for the best results, aim for a longer chill time of around 4 hours. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully, enhancing the overall taste of the dessert.
- Pudding Selection: Instant pudding is the way to go for this recipe. Avoid cooking and serving pudding, as it won’t set properly and may affect the texture of your dirt cake.
- Vanilla Pudding Options: Whether you choose regular vanilla or French vanilla pudding, both work wonderfully in this recipe. While the flavor difference is subtle, the choice between them ultimately comes down to personal preference. Enjoy the creamy goodness either way!

Guide to Manage Leftovers!
- Refrigeration: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can also cover the top of the serving dish with plastic wrap for added freshness. Enjoy within 3-5 days for the best taste.
- Freezing: If you have more leftovers than you can finish in a few days, freezing is a great option. Place the dirt cake in an airtight container and store it in the freezer for up to 1 month.
- Thawing: When you’re ready to enjoy your frozen dirt cake, thaw it slowly in the refrigerator to maintain its texture and flavor. Avoid using the microwave for thawing as it can affect the consistency of the dessert.
